When I think about the phrase “pretty is as pretty does” it initially brings me a sense of confusion. I was asked what this saying meant to me, and had to ponder for some time about this question. Someone can be physically stunning but have the meanest personality and actions. Depending on who is observing this person the individual may be either praised for their beauty or persecuted for their actions. From this stand point a new perspective came about the statement “pretty is as pretty does” I think what it’s truly saying is that a person is only as “pretty” as their actions. With this perspective in mind I began to think about what this looks like in action. Pretty is as pretty does. This persons actions include things that serve not only themselves but others, the greater good, or a distinct purpose. These things are done with grace and on purpose. And finally, these things are done without expectation of recognition, but for their own result. Ultimately, to me “pretty is as pretty does” means to be the best person I can be and to embrace kindness and love in everything I do.

“When I think of my version of a role model, it’s not about being the perfect Samaritan; it’s just being out there and being honest and happily imperfect.”

-Zoe Kravitz
